Russia unleashed what Kyiv called the largest ballistic missile salvo of the four-year war against the Ukrainian capital overnight Saturday into Sunday, firing roughly 40 Iskander, S-400 and Zircon missiles in half an hour and collapsing the entrance hall of the Lukianivska metro station, a strike that followed earlier reports of a smaller overnight barrage and new Western defence pledges.
More than two dozen ballistic rockets were aimed at targets in and around the three-million-strong city, where dozens of explosions echoed through central districts. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported strikes and fires in at least four neighbourhoods, while blazes engulfed residential buildings and a supermarket. At least seven people were wounded.
The assault comes as Ukraine faces a shortage of interceptor missiles for its Patriot batteries and marks the 1,607th day of the Russian invasion.
