June 2026 was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine in four years, with at least 293 killed and 1,990 wounded, according to United Nations monitors. The toll surpassed May's figure of 274 deaths and brought the overall civilian death count since February 2022 to 16,431.
Nearly half the casualties were caused by long-range missile and drone strikes hitting cities far from the front line, notably Kyiv and Dnipro. Along the front itself, drones killed 89 civilians and wounded 588 in June, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported. Separately, Ukrainian strikes on Russia killed 250 civilians in the first half of 2026, a 121 percent increase over the same period last year.
The bloodshed has intensified diplomatic efforts. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended last week's NATO summit in Ankara to press for additional air defences, while Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen joined a French-hosted summit with nine European nations on a joint continental ballistic missile defence system.
