Eddie Howe has left his role as Newcastle United head coach with immediate effect, ending a five-year tenure that produced the club's first major domestic trophy in 70 years. His departure comes just 25 days before Newcastle's Premier League opener against Liverpool on Aug. 23.
Al Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle is the favourite to replace Howe, who managed his final match in a 4-1 pre-season defeat to Bristol City on July 29. Howe guided Newcastle to the 2025 Carabao Cup and two Champions League qualifications, though the side finished 12th last season and suffered an 8-3 aggregate Champions League exit to Barcelona. Reports indicate the installation of Ross Wilson as director of football reduced Howe's influence over transfers.
Newcastle have sold key players including Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a British-record £125m last summer, and Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon to Tottenham and Barcelona respectively this summer. Captain Bruno Guimarães's future remains uncertain with Arsenal pursuing the midfielder.
