Michael Edwards has resigned as chief executive of football at Fenway Sports Group, departing two years into a three-year contract and leaving the ownership group to navigate a significant transitional period at Liverpool.
FSG confirmed the exit on Thursday, describing it as a planned transition following the completion of key strategic priorities. Edwards, who returned to a senior role in March 2024 after Jurgen Klopp's departure, had informed FSG of his intention to step down in autumn 2025. The group has since shelved plans for a multi-club operation, and FSG president Mike Gordon is expected to resume greater day-to-day control of the club.
The departure comes as Liverpool faces a challenging summer. Mohamed Salah left at the end of the 2025/26 campaign, and sporting director Richard Hughes, who appointed Andoni Iraola as head coach following Arne Slot's dismissal, is strongly linked with a move to Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal.
