Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for an initial fee of 92.5 million pounds with add-ons that could take the deal to 100 million pounds. The 26-year-old has signed a six-year contract earning around 275,000 pounds per week, after a two-hour conversation with manager Roberto De Zerbi helped convince him of the club's project.
Tonali, who received a 10-month ban for betting violations shortly after joining Newcastle, departs having become the club's second-highest sale behind Alexander Isak's 125-million-pound move to Liverpool. He joins fellow new signing Mateus Fernandes at Tottenham, with both players set to join the first day of preseason training on Friday.
The investment signals ambition after Spurs finished 17th in the Premier League last season, just two points above relegation, despite total revenues of 565 million pounds. De Zerbi has also brought in Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers, with preseason fixtures planned in New Zealand, Australia, and Europe.
