Newcastle United have appointed Matthias Jaissle as head coach on a four-year contract, paying £9.5 million (€11m) in compensation to Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli. The 38-year-old German, who becomes the fourth German manager in the Premier League, succeeds Eddie Howe after his resignation.

Jaissle joined Newcastle's pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain, and will take charge for the first time in Saturday's friendly against Valencia at the Mestalla. His appointment follows consecutive Asian Champions League titles with Al Ahli and two Austrian Bundesliga crowns with Red Bull Salzburg.

The club confirmed Bruno Guimarães is heading to Arsenal, compounding a summer of departures as the Premier League season approaches on August 21.
