The suspect in the Berlin Pride ramming, 21-year-old Abdul Ballout, was shot dead by police in Spandau on Sunday evening, ending a nationwide manhunt launched after he drove a rented Citroën into a crowd at the Christopher Street Day celebration in Tiergarten park, killing one woman and injuring 29 others.
Ballout's father, Tawfik Ballout, told Der Spiegel his son had been subjected to brainwashing. The younger Ballout had attempted to travel from Lebanon to Syria to join the Islamic State in May 2025, after which he was arrested in Lebanon in July 2025 and spent three months in prison.
A Berlin court had sentenced Ballout to one year and ten months in a juvenile detention centre in May 2026 for preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state.
