A hostage standoff at a Rewe supermarket in Berlin's Marienfelde district ended Saturday morning when special forces stormed the building and freed a female employee who had been held for roughly 11 hours, authorities said.
The incident began shortly after 10 p.m. local time on Friday at the store on the corner of Hildburghauser Straße and Tirschenreuther Ring. Police maintained contact with the gunman throughout the night. A store manager had reportedly spotted a weapon, though Hungarian media reported the man threatened the victim with a knife.
At 9:20 a.m. on Saturday, a tactical unit overwhelmed the suspect using a Taser — no firearms were discharged. The hostage, a Rewe employee, was taken to hospital in shock. The suspect suffered minor injuries and was also hospitalized. Other staff had safely left the building before the raid.
