Zinedine Zidane appointed France head coach on four-year deal through 2030

Zinedine Zidane has been named head coach of the France national football team on a four-year contract running through the 2030 World Cup. The appointment, confirmed Tuesday by federation president Philippe Diallo, takes effect on 1 August.

Zidane succeeds Didier Deschamps, who departed after 14 years in charge following France's fourth-place finish at the 2026 World Cup. Diallo revealed he first contacted Zidane in February 2025 to offer the role, and Zidane said he turned down club offers to wait for the national team. The 54-year-old has been out of coaching since leaving Real Madrid in 2021, where he won two league titles and three consecutive Champions League trophies.

France compete in Nations League Group A1 against Italy, Belgium, and Turkiye. Zidane's first match will be away to Turkiye on 25 September, with his primary target the Euro 2028 finals in England.
