Deschamps departs France after 6-4 bronze medal defeat to England

· Sports FRAENG

France fell 6-4 to England in Saturday's third-place play-off, trailing 4-0 at halftime before a second-half rally that included two goals from Kylian Mbappé and one from Bradley Barcola.

Didier Deschamps took responsibility for the dismal first half and confirmed his departure after 14 years and 185 matches in charge, with 120 wins, having announced his resignation in January 2025. The French Football Federation praised a tenure that delivered the 2018 World Cup, 2021 Nations League and Euro 2016 titles, alongside a 2022 final defeat. Mbappé described Deschamps as central to France's renewal.

Zinedine Zidane is expected to succeed him.
