England face France in third-place playoff after semi-final heartbreak against Argentina

· Sports ENGARGFRA

England will meet France in the World Cup bronze-medal match in Miami on Friday after suffering a 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina on Wednesday.

Anthony Gordon gave England an early lead, but Lionel Messi turned the match with assists for Enzo Fernandez and a 92nd-minute winner from Lautaro Martinez. Manager Thomas Tuchel took responsibility for defensive substitutions that contributed to the late collapse and acknowledged England remain a step below Argentina, Spain and France at this tournament.

A victory over France would give England their best World Cup finish since 1966. Tuchel, who was appointed in January 2025 and signed a two-year extension in February, has guided the team to the latter stages of the competition. Argentina will face Spain in Sunday's final in New Jersey.
