Mark van Bommel has been appointed head coach of Belgium on a contract running through Euro 2028, succeeding Rudi Garcia after Belgium's quarter-final exit at the 2026 World Cup. The 49-year-old Dutchman begins his role on 15 August and becomes the second Dutch manager to lead the Red Devils, after Dick Advocaat's tenure in 2009–2010.
Van Bommel most recently managed Royal Antwerp, where he won the Belgian league title, cup, and Super Cup in 2023. He previously served as an assistant to Bert van Marwijk with Australia at the 2018 World Cup. He will be assisted by Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens, and Reinier Robbemond.
Van Bommel inherits a squad whose so-called golden generation, including Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, and Romelu Lukaku, is widely described as ageing.
