Jorge Jesus was named Portugal's new head coach on Thursday, signing a four-year contract that runs through the 2030 World Cup, which Portugal will co-host alongside Spain and Morocco.
The 71-year-old succeeds Roberto Martínez, who stepped down after Portugal's elimination by Spain in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup. Martínez had held the role since January 2023. Jesus arrives from Al Nassr, where he managed Cristiano Ronaldo during the 2025-26 season and won the Saudi Pro League. Ronaldo, who confirmed the 2026 tournament would be his sixth and final World Cup, has not yet spoken with the new coach, though Jesus said the veteran forward "will never be a problem" for the national team.
Jesus dismissed the need for a squad overhaul, noting the team's average age is 28. His first match in charge will be against Wales on 24 September in the Nations League.
