Rafael Márquez appointed Mexico head coach through 2030 after World Cup exit

The Mexican Football Federation has appointed former captain Rafael Márquez as head coach on a contract running through the 2030 World Cup cycle. The announcement on Wednesday follows Javier Aguirre's departure after Mexico's 3-2 defeat by England in the round of 16 on July 5.

Márquez, 47, served as Aguirre's assistant since the summer of 2024 and will inherit a squad that won the CONCACAF Gold Cup and Nations League in 2025 under his predecessor. The federation said Márquez will ensure continuity of the project Aguirre began two years ago.

The former Barcelona defender's first major test will be the CONCACAF Nations League finals later this year, as Mexico begins preparations for the next World Cup.
