Yemeni government forces launched coordinated attacks on Houthi positions across multiple front lines on Saturday, describing the operation as a response to the rebel group's recent escalation. The military struck Houthi capabilities and forces along several axes and lines of contact, according to a defence ministry statement.
The offensive follows Houthi missile and drone attacks on Thursday that killed at least 30 government soldiers and wounded 15 others in Hadramout and Marib provinces. The Houthis also resumed shelling civilian neighbourhoods in Marib city, with a separate strike on Friday killing two civilians and wounding 14, the health ministry said. The rebels said they targeted a military camp on the city's outskirts.
The Yemeni army repelled a separate Houthi attack Friday evening without casualties. The military warned of a response "at the appropriate time and place". The United Nations has called for de-escalation, condemning Houthi missile attacks and strikes on Red Sea oil tankers.
