Roger Federer returns to US Open for exhibition match after five-year absence from court

Roger Federer will play competitive tennis for the first time in five years, returning to Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday for a doubles exhibition at the US Open. The Swiss star, who has not played a set since his Wimbledon loss to Hubert Hurkacz roughly five years ago, will partner John McEnroe against Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi in a one-night event.

The appearance serves as a farewell to the tournament where Federer won five consecutive titles from 2004 to 2008. Federer, who retired at the 2022 Laver Cup, has confirmed he will not return to the professional tour.

The exhibition precedes his induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport on Saturday. The US Open main draw begins Aug. 30.
