Venus Williams, 46, has been awarded a wildcard into the US Open singles draw, returning to the tournament where she reached the final on her debut 29 years ago in 1997. The two-time champion, who won the title in 2000 and 2001, will compete when the main draw begins on 30 August.
Williams enters the tournament on a prolonged losing streak, having lost her last 14 matches on the WTA Tour and won her last singles match 13 months ago. She has been eliminated in the first round in each of her past five Grand Slam appearances. On Tuesday, she and sister Serena lost in the first round of the Cincinnati Open doubles.
Organisers are also holding a wildcard for 44-year-old Serena Williams, who returned to tennis in June. In the men's draw, Gael Monfils received a wildcard for his final Grand Slam, while Stan Wawrinka is set to retire at year's end.
