Britain's Matthew Hudson-Smith became the first man to win three European 400m titles, clocking 44.17 seconds to take gold at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham's Alexander Stadium. Running from lane nine, he defeated France's Muhammad Abdalla Kounta (44.40) and the Netherlands' Jonas Phijffers, who set a national record of 44.41 for bronze. The victory marked a fifth European title of Hudson-Smith's career and equalled Christophe Lemaitre's record of eight podium finishes at the championships.
In the women's 400m hurdles, Slovakia's Emma Zapletalova won gold in 52.91 seconds, with Britain's Emily Newnham taking silver in a personal best of 53.33.
Finland's Silja Kosonen won the hammer throw with 76.28 metres, ahead of Italy's Sara Fantini and Norway's Beatrice Llano.
