Karsten Warholm won his 400 metres hurdles semifinal in 48.01 seconds at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, booking a spot in Friday's final where he can claim a fourth consecutive continental title. Sweden's Oskar Edlund posted the fastest semifinal time overall at 47.81.
Warholm, the world record holder at 45.94, holds a season best of 46.61 set at the London Diamond League in July. He earlier won mixed 4x400m relay gold with teammates Amalie Iuel, Henriette Jæger and Andreas Kulseng. A victory in the final would surpass his own hat-trick from two years ago, when he matched Harald Schmid's record of three straight titles.
In the men's 400m hurdles, Belgium's Julien Watrin won his opening heat to reach the semifinals, with his next race scheduled for Wednesday.
