Jakob Ingebrigtsen secured his fourth consecutive European 5,000 metres title at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Sunday, clocking 13 minutes 15.29 seconds to edge Germany's Florian Bremm and France's Etienne Daguinos. The victory marked a record-equalling seventh European gold for the Norwegian, who has won his past 12 European track finals since 2019.
The triumph capped a remarkable return for Ingebrigtsen, who underwent Achilles tendon surgery in January and returned to training only six weeks before the championships. His last competitive race was at the World Championships in Tokyo last September, meaning he had been sidelined for nearly a year.
Elsewhere in Birmingham, Norway's Henriette Jaeger anchored the mixed 4x400 metres relay to gold in a record time, while Britain's Amy Hunt won the 100 metres in 11 seconds flat. Italy's Leonardo Fabbri took shot put gold and the Netherlands' Jessica Schilder became the first three-time European women's shot put champion since Nadezhda Chizhova.
