Elliott returns to Liverpool after Villa loan falls short of purchase trigger

· Sports GBR

Harvey Elliott has returned to Liverpool after making only nine appearances during a season-long loan at Aston Villa, one short of the threshold that would have obliged Villa to sign him permanently for £35 million. The midfielder played just 277 minutes under Unai Emery, who described the outcome as embarrassing for everyone involved.

Elliott, who has spent seven years at Liverpool, did collect a Europa League winners' medal with Villa in 2025-26. He has since featured in both of Liverpool's pre-season victories under new manager Andoni Iraola this month.

Liverpool's pre-season schedule continues on July 31 against Leeds United in Chicago, where Jeremy Jacquet is set to make his debut. The club will open the Premier League campaign without Joe Gomez, who sustained a muscle injury on July 26.
