The wreckage of a Tecnam P2008 light aircraft missing since Sunday was found in a mountainous area of Calabria, southern Italy, with both occupants confirmed dead.
The debris was located in the Laghicello area between the municipalities of Fuscaldo and San Benedetto Ullano in the province of Cosenza. Recovery operations for the bodies and the aircraft were still under way. The plane had been carrying two lawyers: pilot Carlo Arnulfo, 64, from Rome, and Angela Buccico, 55, from Matera.
The aircraft departed Capo d'Orlando in Sicily at 9:30 a.m. Sunday and was due to land at Sibari roughly two hours later. Its onboard locator stopped transmitting and the passengers' mobile phones became unreachable. The last known contact from Buccico was a WhatsApp message sent to a relative at 10:30 a.m. A search involving drones, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft had been concentrated around the mountain communities of San Pietro and Scarcelli before the discovery.
