A 61-year-old scout leader died on Monday in the northern Apennines after plunging down a ravine while attempting to rescue a 13-year-old boy who had fallen into the same embankment, Italian authorities said.
The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. during a scouting excursion on Monte Tavola in the Costa degli Spini area near Bosco di Corniglio, at an elevation of roughly 840 metres in the province of Parma. The man, who was the father of two children attending the scout camp, fell after the teenager tumbled down the slope shortly after 1 p.m.
Alpine rescue teams and Carabinieri officers responded to the scene. The boy was airlifted to Parma's Ospedale Maggiore in medium-severity condition with fractures to his lower limbs. The Carabinieri are investigating the circumstances of the fall.
