Tommaso Ugolini, a 19-year-old from Bologna, drowned on Thursday afternoon while swimming off Rivabella beach near Gallipoli in southern Italy, where he was holidaying with friends in the Salento region.
A friend raised the alarm after Ugolini failed to resurface following several strokes in the water. Two lifeguards from a nearby beach club dived in to recover the teenager and bring him to shore, where resuscitation efforts began immediately with the help of an off-duty doctor present on the beach.
Emergency medical personnel continued chest compressions for approximately 45 minutes, but the attempts to revive Ugolini were unsuccessful. Carabinieri from the Lecce operational unit also attended the scene.
