A teenage girl died after slipping and falling roughly 90 metres down a rock face while hiking with her family in the Latemar mountain range of Italy's Dolomites on Thursday morning.
The incident occurred at an altitude of about 2,600 metres near the Torre di Pisa mountain refuge on Cima di Valbona. Witnesses alerted emergency services around midday. A rescue helicopter operated by Aiut Alpin Dolomites was scrambled from Val Gardena, and a medical team was winched to the scene. Rescuers attempted to revive the girl but were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the fall. Her body was airlifted and transferred to the mortuary in Predazzo.
Reports on the girl's age differed, with sources citing 13 or 14 years old. The Alpine Unit of the Italian Financial Guard is investigating the circumstances of the tragedy.
