A large debris landslide struck the Sesto Dolomites near the Tre Scarperi refuge in northern Italy on Tuesday afternoon following a sudden, violent thunderstorm, prompting a major search-and-rescue mobilisation before the all-clear was given.
Helicopters airlifted Alpine and Speleological Rescue of South Tyrol teams to the site as numerous hikers were known to be in the area at the time of the collapse. Poor mobile phone coverage around the refuge hampered communication during the operation, which also involved the Philican helicopter. Shortly after 17:00 local time, rescuers confirmed that no one was buried beneath the mass of earth and rock, ending the alert.
A second, smaller landslide occurred in nearby Val Fiscalina but caused no damage or injuries.
