Julian Weber won gold in the javelin at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham with a championship record of 90.40 metres on his final attempt, overtaking teammate Nick Thumm, who had led until the last round and took silver with a personal best of 83.76 m. Latvia's Patriks Gallums claimed bronze at 82.97 m.
Weber, who struggled with shoulder problems this season and only entered competition in mid-July, had thrown a European season best of 87.04 m in Lucerne before improving markedly in the final. Thomas Röhler, the 2016 Olympic champion, failed to advance from qualifying.
Germany's 4x100 m relay team won silver behind Britain. The German Athletics Association entered the final day with 15 medals, including four golds. Owen Ansah was absent due to an alleged missed doping test. Elsewhere, Ukraine's Yaroslava Mahuchikh won high jump gold, while Stefan Nillessen of the Netherlands took the 1,500 m title.
