Germany's Owen Ansah claimed the European 200 metres title in Birmingham with a time of 19.95 seconds, becoming his country's first continental champion at the distance in 44 years. Britain's Zharnel Hughes took silver in 20.16 seconds and Italy's Eseosa Desalu bronze in 20.26. The victory, however, is overshadowed by the National Anti Doping Agency's proposal of a four-year suspension after accusing Ansah of refusing a doping test in July.
The German Athletics Association leaves Birmingham with twelve medals across the championships. Emil Agyekum finished second in the 400 metres hurdles in 47.87 seconds, while Shanice Craft earned discus silver with a throw of 65.72 metres. Norway's Karsten Warholm won the men's 400 metres hurdles in a championship record of 46.63 seconds.
In other finals, Switzerland's Audrey Werro captured the women's 800 metres in 1:54.81. In the heptathlon, Germany's Sophie Weißenberg sits fourth after day one with 3,911 points.
