Six people, including the suspected gunman, were killed in a mass shooting across rural northern Michigan on Friday, with a seventh person left in critical condition.
Police responded to a home in Lake Township, Missaukee County, shortly before noon local time after emergency calls reporting gunfire, finding three people dead and one critically wounded. The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Chad Hickman, fled before troopers arrived, triggering a manhunt. His vehicle was later spotted near a wooded area in Caldwell Township, where he and a fourth victim were found dead. A fifth victim was discovered at a separate home in the county, believed to be linked to the same case. State police described the incident as a multi-homicide investigation.
Hickman was going through a divorce and had been sentenced in 2024 to more than a year in jail for misdemeanours including child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
