Cyberattacks on US water systems spread to Michigan and at least five other states

· Technology USAIRN

Cyberattacks targeting US water infrastructure have expanded to at least seven states, with Michigan confirming nine systems were hit after more than 30 facilities in Minnesota were targeted earlier in the week.

Since 27 July, water operators in at least seven states have reported incidents to the FBI, with some activity degrading operations. The city of Braham, Minnesota, asked residents to minimize water use for several hours on Monday after its plant went offline. The FBI, which is leading the investigation, has not publicly identified a culprit, while the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has warned of Iranian-linked hackers targeting water systems. President Donald Trump dismissed Iranian involvement in the Minnesota attack, blaming state officials instead, even as US officials say Iran has intensified cyber operations since strikes resumed between Washington and Tehran in February.
