Vance Boelter, 59, was sentenced to two consecutive life terms plus 40 years in federal prison on 23 July 2026 for the killing of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and the wounded shooting of state Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette.
Boelter pleaded guilty in June 2026 to six counts to avoid the death penalty, agreeing to the sentence that carries no possibility of parole. The attacks occurred on 14 June 2025 in the Minneapolis suburbs of Champlin and Brooklyn Park, prompting a 43-hour manhunt ending in rural Green Isle that involved 20 SWAT teams. Investigators found a list of more than 45 politicians' names in the gunman's car. Boelter, reportedly motivated by anti-abortion views and hostility toward Democrats, disguised himself as a police officer during the attack on the Hortman home.
Boelter still faces state charges including two counts of first-degree murder, four counts of attempted murder, impersonating a police officer and animal cruelty. The Hoffman family has filed a civil lawsuit against him.
