Altinget, the Danish-owned political news outlet, is closing its Norwegian edition after four years, affecting up to 20 employees. Editor-in-chief Veslemøy Østrem announced the closure on LinkedIn, saying staff were informed at a meeting on Monday morning and that the decision came as a shock.
Owner JP/Politikens Hus, which acquired Altinget in May, cited poor financial performance as the reason. Mette Hundebøl Nielsen, managing director of JP/Politiken Business Media, described the move as a "comprehensive economic assessment". Altinget's chief executive Anne Marie Kindberg said it was not possible to establish the right financial foundation for the niche operation in Norway.
Altinget was launched in Norway in 2022 as a digital political newspaper. The parent group operates around 50 niche media outlets across Scandinavia, and its Swedish and Danish editions will continue unaffected.
