A Polish-registered coach overturned on the M3 motorway in eastern Hungary early Sunday, killing 12 people and injuring at least 10 others. The bus, carrying 57 passengers and two drivers, veered off a straight section of road near Mezökeresztes, roughly 140 kilometres east of Budapest, plunged into a ditch and rolled over around 1 a.m.
Police said the driver appeared to have fallen asleep at the wheel before the crash, and Romanian media reported that authorities have detained the driver. The vehicle was travelling toward Nyíregyháza when it left the carriageway.
Polish President Rafał Nawrocki expressed grief over the disaster on social media, while Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski confirmed that consular services were being deployed to assist victims and their families.
