At least 18 people, many of them teenagers, were killed on Tuesday when two pick-up trucks carrying agricultural workers collided in northern Egypt. The crash occurred in the Al Dauauis area of Ismailia governorate, near the Al Shabab power plant, the Egyptian Ministry of Health said.
The collision involved a total of 47 people, and around 30 were injured. Among the dead were children as young as 10 years old. Health ministry spokesperson Hosam Abdel Gafar said hospital readiness levels had been raised in response.
The wounded were transferred to Qasasin Central Hospital for treatment. Pick-up trucks are commonly used to transport farm labourers on rural Egyptian roads, where traffic safety standards remain a persistent concern.
