A rockfall inside a tunnel at Egypt's Sukari gold mine has killed one worker and injured five others, halting operations at the country's largest gold-producing site.
The accident occurred in an underground section of the mine, located roughly 30 kilometres southwest of Marsa Alam in Egypt's eastern desert. The five injured workers were transported to a hospital in Marsa Alam and are in stable condition. Work at the site has been suspended pending an investigation.
Egypt's Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawy has ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the incident. The Sukari mine, which produces approximately 500,000 ounces of gold annually, is operated by Sukari Gold Mines Company, a joint venture between the Egyptian government and AngloGold Ashanti, which acquired former operator Centamin in 2024.
