A shallow earthquake struck northeastern Egypt early on Monday, shaking Cairo and towns along the Suez Canal but causing no reported casualties or damage.

The magnitude 5.2 tremor hit at 03:00 local time with its epicentre roughly 38 kilometres from the city of Suez, about 120 km east of the capital, at a depth of 10 kilometres. The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics said no injuries or material damage were recorded. The Egyptian Red Crescent activated emergency response plans in affected governorates and urged residents to avoid old or damaged buildings, while the Health Ministry also launched an emergency monitoring plan.
