At least 20 schoolchildren and one adult were killed when a school bus crashed in the Kapchorwa area of eastern Uganda on Thursday evening. The victims were pupils from King David Junior School in Ndejje, returning from a study trip to Sipi Falls.
The crash occurred at approximately 20:00 local time in Chekwatit village. Preliminary investigations indicate the bus suffered a mechanical fault before the driver lost control on Chekwatit Hill. The vehicle struck a large rock and overturned. Among the dead was Tadeo Ssekade, the school's founder and director. Three other adults and several children were injured.
Uganda has faced a series of deadly road incidents, including a two-bus collision in October 2025 that killed 46 people. Official records show more than 5,100 people died in road crashes across the country in 2024.
