Uganda has discharged its last Ebola patient from Mulago Hospital in Kampala, leaving the country with no confirmed active cases of the Bundibugyo strain as of 16 July 2026. The milestone begins a 42-day monitoring period required under World Health Organization guidelines before an outbreak can be formally declared over.
The outbreak in Uganda, which recorded 20 confirmed cases and two deaths, originated from a man who arrived from the Democratic Republic of Congo in May. The DRC, where the epidemic was officially declared on 15 May, has reported 2,073 cases and 796 deaths as of 14 July.
Fifteen countries maintain partial or total travel restrictions on Uganda, and the United States has placed the country at its highest advisory level. Meanwhile, the University of Oxford has launched a phase I clinical trial for a vaccine targeting the Bundibugyo strain.
