A second U.S. citizen infected with Ebola has been flown to Germany for treatment, arriving overnight at Frankfurt Airport before being transferred to the city's university hospital. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the patient was working for a humanitarian organisation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain, for which no vaccine or targeted therapy currently exists.
Germany has emerged as a receiving centre for Ebola evacuations. A first American patient arrived on May 20 and was treated at Berlin's Charité hospital, where he was discharged after roughly two weeks. The Bundibugyo virus was detected in Europe for the first time in late June, when a doctor in France tested positive before being released from hospital earlier this month.
The ongoing outbreak in Congo has now produced roughly 650 confirmed deaths and at least 1,830 infections, making it one of the deadliest Ebola events in recent years.
