Six killed as camper and bus collide head-on on central Italian highway

Six people died and 27 were injured on Sunday when a camper veered into oncoming traffic and struck a passenger bus head-on on the SS79 Ternana highway near Colli sul Velino, central Italy. The death toll rose to six from earlier reports of five, according to updated figures.

The victims included both bus drivers and two passengers, along with two people travelling in the camper, highway police in Rieti said. Four critically injured victims were airlifted to Rome's Gemelli hospital and a facility in Terni, while the remaining wounded were taken to hospitals in Rieti, Terni and Foligno. Three cars were also caught up in the crash, one of which overturned.

The highway was closed in both directions at kilometre 18.650 as investigators examined the scene. Initial reports indicated five fatalities before the revised count emerged.
