Norway's relay team returns gold medals after wrong time engraved

Norway's 4x400-metre mixed relay team returned their European Championship gold medals after organisers engraved the British silver medallists' time instead of the Norwegian winning mark in Birmingham.

The quartet of Karsten Warholm, Andreas Kulseng, Amalie Iuel and Henriette Jæger set a championship record of 3:09.62 but refused to accept the medals when they bore the runners-up time of 3:10.47. Organiser Ken Burkett apologised for the error, described by officials as fatal, and arranged for corrected medals to be delivered to Norwegian Athletics Association sports director Erlend Slokvik on Tuesday evening.

The replacement medals carrying the correct time have since reached the Norwegian delegation, organisers confirmed.
