A new magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck Granada province on Tuesday, temporarily forcing the evacuation of the Nasrid Palaces and the Alcazaba at the Alhambra, after a magnitude 5.0 tremor hit the same area early Saturday. Three people sustained minor injuries, including a minor taken to hospital, First Vice President Antonio Sanz confirmed. The latest quake, centered on Gójar, was followed by aftershocks of 4.2 and 4.0 magnitude. Regional president Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla urged maximum caution, while the metro reduced train speeds to 30 kph.
The National Geographic Institute has recorded 348 tremors in the Granada basin since August 14, 37 of them felt by residents. Researcher José Morales said the current episode differs from the 2021 Atarfe swarm and warned a larger quake remains possible.
The city opened an assistance office in the Zaidín district on Tuesday, offering free legal advice coordinated with the local bar association, as Mayor Marifrán Carazo thanked volunteer building inspectors focusing on traditional load-bearing structures.
