A powerful earthquake struck central Colombia on Monday, rattling buildings in the capital Bogotá and triggering evacuations across the city. The tremor was felt across a broad swath of northwestern South America and into Central America, reaching as far as Quito, Panama, and the Venezuelan border.
Magnitude estimates varied. The Colombian Geological Survey put the figure at 6.6, while the United States Geological Survey recorded it at 7.4. The epicentre was located near San José del Palmar in the western Chocó region, roughly 400 kilometres west of Bogotá, at a depth of about 96 kilometres.
The governor of Chocó reported that people and buildings were damaged in the regional capital Quibdó. The full extent of damage was not immediately clear.
