A magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck northern Tuscany on Tuesday morning, shaking buildings across Pisa and sending residents into the streets. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology located the epicentre seven kilometres west of Pisa at a depth of eight kilometres, with the tremor recorded at 10:15 local time.
The tremor was felt across neighbouring provinces including Lucca, Massa-Carrara and as far as Florence. Dozens of people evacuated public offices in central Pisa as a precaution.
Tuscany Governor Eugenio Giani said regional authorities were conducting checks and had received hundreds of calls to the 112 emergency line, adding there were no reports of injuries or damage. A smaller magnitude 2.8 quake hit the same area on 31 July.
