A magnitude 3.5 earthquake struck southern Portugal in the early hours of Monday, shaking residents across the Beja and Setúbal districts, the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said.
The tremor was recorded at 03:08 local time with its epicentre roughly 18 kilometres east of Odemira and was felt in the municipalities of Ourique, Almodôvar and Santiago do Cacém. It reached a maximum intensity of IV on the modified Mercalli scale in Ourique, a level typically described as widely noticed indoors but causing no damage.
Earlier overnight, the IPMA also registered a separate magnitude 2.5 earthquake at 00:13, centred approximately six kilometres east-southeast of Cape St. Vincent, the southwestern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. No casualties or structural damage have been reported from either event.
