Celebrations across Spain following the national team's 2026 World Cup final victory triggered ground vibrations detected by seismometers in cities across the country, according to scientific institutions.
Spain clinched their second World Cup title after Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute of extra time against Argentina in New Jersey on Sunday. Sensors belonging to the Geosciences Barcelona Educational Seismic Network, the Spanish Institute of Geography and the Catalan Geological Institute recorded three distinct vibration peaks during the match: Torres's goal, a disallowed goal and the final whistle, with the final whistle producing the most intense signal at around 00:02 local time.
Vibrations were detected in stations in Algeciras, Barcelona, Cádiz, Granada and Huelva, among others. Similar seismic readings were recorded during Spain's previous knockout matches and after their victory in the 2024 European Championship final against England.
