Florentino Pérez, who won re-election against Enrique Riquelme, promised Mourinho's return during snap elections in June, with the announcement made on the opening day of the World Cup. Mourinho takes over a squad reshaped after Xabi Alonso was dismissed in January and interim coach Álvaro Arbeloa presided over a Copa del Rey elimination in Albacete and a Champions League quarter-final exit to Bayern Munich.
Real Madrid have spent heavily in the transfer market, with 19-year-old Yan Diomandé arriving as the club's record signing. Ibrahima Konaté, Marc Cucurella, Denzel Dumfries, and Bernardo Silva also joined, while Dani Carvajal and David Alaba departed.
