José Mourinho has revealed he signed a contract to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager in 2013 before abruptly reversing his decision to return to Chelsea instead.
Ferguson confirmed that Mourinho accepted the job offer but changed his mind within hours, a move that reportedly left Mourinho emotional as he withdrew from the agreement. The post instead went to David Moyes, who was sacked after just 10 months. Mourinho eventually took charge at Old Trafford in May 2016, succeeding Louis van Gaal, but was dismissed in December 2018 after two and a half years.
Mourinho, who won his third Premier League title with Chelsea after his 2013 return, is now back in charge at Real Madrid, the club where he set a La Liga record with 100 points in 2011-12.
