Léon Marchand claimed the 200 m butterfly title at the European long-course swimming championships on Saturday evening at the Paris Olympic Aquatic Centre, finishing in 1:51.72, the fastest time in the world this year. The French swimmer finished more than two seconds ahead of Hungary's Richard Marton, who took silver. The victory followed a silver medal in the 4x200 m freestyle relay five days earlier. Marchand is scheduled to swim the 400 m freestyle on Sunday as the championships draw to a close.
In the women's 50 m freestyle final, Sara Sjöström missed out on becoming the sole record holder for European long-course gold medals, losing by two hundredths of a second to Poland's Katarzyna Maria Wasick in 23.86. The Swede remains level with Franziska van Almsick at 18 career long-course European titles.
