PARIS — Simona Quadarella completed an 800-1,500m freestyle double at the European Swimming Championships on Friday, winning the 1,500m in 15:46.22 ahead of Germany's Isabel Gose and Maya Werner. Romania's David Popovici claimed the 200m freestyle title in 1:44.15.
Italy's medal haul continued into Saturday's session. Nicolò Martinenghi won his second gold of the championships in the 50m breaststroke, following his earlier 100m victory, while teammate Simone Cerasuolo took silver. Sara Curtis became the first Italian woman to medal in the 50m freestyle, claiming bronze in 23.99 seconds and adding to her four-medal tally that includes a world-record gold in the 50m backstroke.
In Friday's other finals, Belgium's Roos Vanotterdijk retained her 100m butterfly title in 56.08, and the Neutral Athletes B team won the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay. Several Italian swimmers, including Thomas Ceccon and Benedetta Pilato, advanced through morning heats in their respective events.
